The Power of Flash Sentences & Flash Cards – Tools for a Stronger Mindset

7 months into remission: I see you. I appreciate you. I thank you. | 03.13.25

Here’s a snippet from my new book, Cancer Ramblings, rambling 32 titled Flash Sentences:

"We are here, you and me.
You’re reading these words, you can see. You’re alive, and so am I. Feel your aliveness now.
Breathe, then breathe again, go for three feelingly.
What sounds are you hearing now?
Can you feel your heart pounding?
Where are you now?
I rambled this page in the four, behind my hospital walls.
Be strong.
Don’t fear a thing, you are stronger than fear makes you believe"

Dear friends,

Today, I want to share a practice that’s helped me immensely throughout my cancer journey and beyond—the power of flash sentences and flash cards. When facing challenges, especially the kind that make your mind swirl with doubt and fear, these simple tools can make all the difference.

I call them "flash sentences" and "flash cards" because they work just like quick, sharp tools that interrupt negative thinking and redirect your mind to a place of strength. When you're in the depths of fear, uncertainty, or emotional turbulence, these practices are like lifelines.

Flash Sentences:

These are short, powerful affirmations or phrases that instantly bring you back to your center (in my book that is rambling 32). When doubts about your strength or ability creep in, these sentences are like a reset button for your mind. Some of the flash sentences I relied on during my cancer journey included:

  • Can you feel your heart pounding?

  • Don’t fear a thing, you are stronger than fear makes you believe.

  • Love your life fully even when it is hard.

  • …and many more rambled on.

By reading these repeating these, I trained my mind to focus on what I could control and what was positive, helping me shift from a place of fear to a place of empowerment. Repetition is key—the more often you return to these flash sentences, the more they coat your mind with resilience and peace.

Flash Cards:

In addition to flash sentences, I also used the concept of flash cards—mental images or words that act as quick reminders of positivity. I would visualize or "flash" an image in my mind that reminded me of the strength I had within me or a positive outcome I wanted to manifest, like an image of me running on the beach strong, healthy with hair! That carried me through the darkness of chemo.

These quick “flash cards” weren’t just about escaping the momentary challenge; they were about dwelling more on the outcome—the better, positive side of the experience—than on the current difficulty. They helped me regain perspective, focus on the end result, and hold space for healing.

The magic of these tools lies in how simple yet effective they are. Whether you're facing cancer, personal struggles, or any of life’s unpredictable challenges, you can create your own set of flash sentences and flash cards. Use them when fear, doubt, or overwhelm come knocking. And, just like I shared in my book Cancer Ramblings, practicing these techniques can allow you to break through the fog and come back to the light within you.

I encourage you to reflect on your own flash sentences or flash cards. What words or images help you shift your mindset when life gets tough? Write them down, repeat them, and let them be a source of strength when you need them most…

…or pickup a copy of my book, and let my flash sentences and power ramblings assist you into the powerful being that you are!

Take a moment today to share with me yours—I'd love to hear the words or images that help you stay grounded, positive, and resilient. I would love to share them with this community.
