Cancer is the New Cavity

This is part of Cancer Ramblings, a real-time account of living through cancer and healing through sound & wellness, written by Sandy Duarte.

Embracing Cancer: Turning Fear into Purpose

Did you know that 1 in 5 people will develop cancer in their lifetime? It's a staggering statistic, one that’s becoming more and more common in today’s world. But while cancer has become an undeniable part of our reality, we don’t have to live in fear of it. In fact, we can learn to embrace this new reality with a sense of empowerment, and use it to deepen our lives with prevention and intention.

For many, cancer is still seen through a lens of fear and hopelessness. But the truth is, we have more tools, information, and support at our fingertips than ever before. From scientific advancements in medicine to a wealth of holistic knowledge, we now have the power to shape our cancer journeys, take control, and transform our experience into something profoundly life-changing.

The environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and food we consume are all playing a part in our health—and we’re more aware of this than ever. But we are also witnessing a rise in open, honest conversations about cancer. We can now share our stories, not just to inform others but to inspire hope and offer practical advice for those walking similar paths. The act of storytelling itself has become a powerful tool for healing, creating communities where people can find support, empathy, and strength.

My Journey: Turning Cancer Into Purpose

As many of you know, I am a stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. When I was first diagnosed, I felt like I had stepped into the darkest space of my life. Cancer, at that moment, seemed like an enemy—an opponent to be feared. But quickly I decided to change my questions from Why? Why me? To why not? I can do this! The mindset change allowed me to find the warrior within me (and the friend) to comprehend this experience as a teaching not a beating. I began to see cancer differently. I started to recognize it as a strange teacher, a friend that was here to challenge me in ways I never imagined.

Cancer forced me to confront my life in its rawest form, to ask questions I never would have asked before. I realized that this “strange visitor” was not here to destroy me but rather to deepen my understanding of myself and life.

It is through that lens of mindfulness and self-awareness that I began to turn pain into purpose. Every moment of suffering—whether it was the chemotherapy, the fear, or the uncertainty—became an opportunity for growth. Through the darkest days, I found the seeds of transformation, not just in the science and medicine that helped me heal, but in the ancient holistic wisdom I embraced from the East.

Science and Holistic Wisdom: The Power of Integration

One of the things I am most grateful for in my cancer journey is the marriage of science and medicine with holistic healing. Modern medicine—chemotherapy—saved my life. It gave me the fighting chance I needed to beat cancer. But what made the journey bearable was the integration of ancient practices such as yoga, meditation, sound bathing, prayer and mindful breathing.

This balance between the two worlds—science and holistic wisdom—has been the cornerstone of my healing. And it’s something I share in my book, Cancer Ramblings, where I explore how mind over matter can be the key to shifting our mindset, finding peace, and ultimately, transforming our lives.

The journey through cancer isn’t just about survival. It’s about thriving through adversity, embracing the discomfort, and finding a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you. And it’s about realizing that while cancer may be more common today, so is the wisdom we have to fight it, heal from it, and grow through it.

A New Mindset: Choosing Growth Over Fear

We are at a pivotal moment in cancer history. With the tools and knowledge available to us, we can choose to see cancer differently. It is no longer just a sentence of fear and death; it’s an invitation to grow, to evolve, and to find purpose in the pain. When we change our mindset, we allow ourselves the power to rise above fear and see cancer as an opportunity for transformation.

Every cancer survivor has a story—a story that holds the power to heal others. Through this shared experience, we create a community of support, wisdom, and light. The cancer conversation is shifting, and with it, the way we view our health and our healing.

I wrote Cancer Ramblings as a way to understand the absurdity of my health journey, and through it, I hope to inspire you to find peace, strength, and hope in your own journey—whatever that may look like - even beyond Cancer! And if you’re walking through this challenge, or supporting a loved one who is, remember this: you are not alone. We are all part of this shared experience, and together, we can turn any pain into purpose and fear into strength.

Take care of yourself.
With love, light and gratitude,
